Waldhaus is the ideal base for a walking holiday in the Salzkammergut. There are many excellent scenic walks of varying lengths around the area which are well signposted.  Perfect for everything from a high paced Nordic walk right down to a gentle wander round the lake to Strobl.

The easy way up mountains

Waldhaus gives you excellent access to the two best ways to get up a mountain.  Firstly, you are only a 15 minute drive to the Schafburg Mountain railway, who’s steam powered locomotives will get you to the top in comfort with 45 minutes.    The other is the Zwölferhorn Cable Car just a few minutes further away at St Gilgen.  Both give spectacular 360 degree views of the alpine lakes and mountains.

There are lots of well-marked mountain bike trails ranging from easy to very demanding. It is possible to hire mountain bikes locally. The internationally renowned ‘Salzkammergut Trophy’ takes place in the lakes and valley around here. If you would like us to enquire about bike hire for you please ask.

Summer Tobogganing
Great fun for all the family and only a 10 minute drive from Waldhaus, the Sommer Rodelbahn is ideal as part of a family day out, perhaps combined with a visit to the animal park or a visit to Wolfgangsee.

Dorf der Tiere
Literally Animal Village is situated just the other side of Gschwendt on the way to St Gilgen approximately 10 minutes drive away by car.

All weather family fun
The Abarena is a perfect family day out, extensive indoor and outdoor activities including play grounds, observation towers, model making, electric go karts and a jet flight simulator.  What more could you ask for.

The Wolfgangsee area is home to some wonderful  museums of all sorts.  If you’re into music it’s got to be Mozart’s mother’s house in St Gilgen, followed by the museum of musical instruments, which is not far away.  If local history is more your thing, try the heritage museum for a look at traditional local trades.

Waldhaus is an ideal base for a history holiday. From B.C. to present day it is all only a short drive away.

No visit to the Salzkammergut is complete without a visit to this historic city. Famous as Mozart's birthplace, it has lots to offer, whether you are a culture vulture, seeking art galleries, concerts or museums, or are like many people, following the "Sound of Music" trail and would like to see some of the locations from the film, Salzburg is just spellbinding! Fabulous buildings, open-air music and cafés that serve delicious coffee and cakes. Shopping in Salzburg is excellent and a visit to the famous Getreidegasse is essential with its quaint shop signs that hang over the narrow street is essential for avid shoppers, seeking designer labels, fabulous jewellery or simply window shopping! There is a market most days selling seasonal produce and souvenirs and in November and December there is also a famous Christmas market in the Dom Platz in the old town.

Waldhaus to Salzburg city centre is less than an hours drive, with its quaint shop signs that hang over the narrow street is essential for avid shoppers, seeking designer labels, fabulous jewellery or simply window shopping. There is a market most days selling seasonal produce and souvenirs. The famous Salzburg Music Festival takes place during the summer.

St Wolfgang
St Wolfgang is a village beyond compare.  The narrow cobbled streets are home to some of the most wonderful architecture in the whole of the Salzkammergut. Teeming with shops, stores, restaurants and bars St Wolfgang is a delight to behold.  Take the opportunity to wander slowly and enjoy the beauty, the atmosphere and the pace of life.

Evenings in St Wolfgang are ideal if you want to eat out particularly in summer when several restaurants have 'al fresco' tables. There are quite a number of bars right by the lake, with some offering live entertainment particularly at the weekends.

St Wolfgang holds fortnightly festivals in July and August called 'Summer Nights' which are truly unmissable. Street music, activities for the children, a street market, pavement bars and restaurants combine to create a real party atmosphere.

Bad Ischl
Just 20 minutes away, Bad Ischl is historic holiday home of the Kaisers.

If you would like a guided tour around this historic town, why not take a horse drawn carriage ride to see the sights.

Throughout the summer all the local shops, restaurants and bars are open and there are a profusion of pavement cafés where you can sit and take in the scenery or simply people watch. The world famous confectioner and coffee house Zauner, where superb cakes and fabulous house-made chocolates can be sampled, is an essential part of any visit to Bad Ischl and in Summer they have a super riverside café on Bad Ischl's stylish Esplanade.

Another not-to-be-missed attraction is a visit the Kaiser Villa, the holiday home of Kaiser Franz Joseph I, perched on the banks of the River Ischl. It is said that Franz Joseph brought his court to Bad Ischl in order to benefit from the health giving properties of the waters here.

Part of the Dachstein west area and a short drive from Waldhaus, Russbach is an ideal place for all the family to visit on a warm summer's day offer in the chance to walk in the mountains, hunt for fossils, have fun at the water park and many other attractions.

Advent & Christmas Markets
From the end of November until New Year there are Advent markets held at St Wolfgang, St Gilgen and Strobl. They are all individual and excellent in their own way.  We think the one here in St Wolfgang is the best, it’s full of traditional stalls, games, food and drink.  Great in any weather but absolutely magical when it snows, and best of all it’s only a very short walk home.

One of the most memorable holiday experiences for many guests is strolling among the candle-lit streets with seasonal music playing or choirs singing, while looking for Christmas gifts and traditional Austrian foods from beautifully decorated stalls.  Be sure to enjoy a mug of warming gluhwein and try the hot roasted chestnuts. A giant candle floats on Wolfgangsee during Advent and Christmas and you can take a romantic moonlight cruise around the lake to complete your special day out.
